A clean index is the effort of many search engines and the operators have been working on it for years. However, this is not easy because, on the other hand spam and piracy site owners are also very creative and always bring the search results to the forefront. This cat-and-mouse game can also be observed in Great Britain, at least at the moment.
The media industry in the UK is no longer enough for Google & Co to strive more. With legal support, a self-imposed commitment has now been created for Google and Microsoft, which obliges to ban links to piracy pages at least from the first page of the SERPs. They should be no longer prominent. Also the autocomplete in the search field is going to be censored, so no more search terms are suggested, which leads to these sides.
With regard to piracy, this self-commitment in Great Britain will surely please some. On the other hand, this development also shows that search engines are no longer as independent and uncensored as they like to point out. In the case of Google, it is even the case that for the first time someone intervenes in the search results and manipulation takes place. The question now arises as to whether the manipulation will soon be demanded by other countries – and whether they may not only ban piracy pages in the future.
