SSL Certificates – Shortened Validity for more Security

It is somewhat a trend that the browser companies are pushing for more strict guidelines when it comes to browser security. This tie around it’s an initiative from Apple, and the owners of the Chrome, Firefox and Safari browsers to set up a new expiration limit for the SSL / TLS certificates. Since September 1st 2020, the maximum expiration time is 13 months.

The shorter expiration time for the SSL / TLS certificates should contribute to the internet security since the time frame, available for external attacks that could take advantage of the certificate algorithm, will be shorter. All the certificates valid prior will be losing their validity after 13 months.

This should not be a major issue for the certificate issuing authorities as most of them use automatic updating.
